Tetris Wouldn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category Could Fix That

Each time a major honors show nears, there’s always a demand for introducing of new categories to honor overlooked contributions and fill the hearts of fans with niche passions.

My colleague previously argued for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are tabletop games, which is someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward since similar to blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case backing this proposal is the most urgent and significant. This is the request: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and it will always generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that movie academies steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents an essential concession within the realm of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse they hardly constitute as a single art form.

For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.

Present Award Structure

Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these award types successfully include numerous genres, making space possible accommodating various experiences.

Different situation exists for logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: building puzzles in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. What category would fit them among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Recognition Challenges

There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games published annually without proper recognition at major award shows, except when they manage to fit for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging Indie races.

  • A renowned logic title got overlooked in any category in 2014
  • A different innovative game missed out in 2019
  • Popular arranging title was overlooked in 2021
  • Limited numbers of logic titles scraped into niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

Frequently they represent small games, yet the craft in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles stand as most popular titles globally and have been for over a decade.

The iconic tile-matching title rivals famous sandbox experiences for the title of most purchased experience; it also contends as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.

The Solution and Justification

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. You could fill a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude so many good games out.

To emphasize again, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers operate at the demanding boundary interactive creation, creating some of essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
