Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was required to halt operations for an extended period when multiple of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Regional Consequences
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its border nation utilizing the meteorological equipment.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why criminals use a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather factors rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Atmospheric equipment are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to confiscate the maximum possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that this activity become not financially viable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Parallel situations in nearby states have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
