2K Hires Popular Battle Royale Producer to Revitalize Struggling Hero Shooter Ambitious Title

2K Games has appointed Ben Brinkman from the creators of Apex Legends to direct the studio crew at their internal studio, which is currently crafting the forthcoming over-the-shoulder action-packed title known as this innovative game.

Management Change Follows Poor Response

Brinkman takes on the leadership position at 31st Union following the departure of former leader Michael Condrey, who was reportedly let go due to Project Ethos' disappointing unveiling last autumn.

Recently, 2K president David Ismailer notified employees about this strategic move through an official communication, which stressed that early feedback sessions had shown the requirement for a more defined vision.

Ismailer stated that the team is now refining Project Ethos with a renewed vision, aiming to address community desires.

A Pattern of Key Acquisitions

The news mirrors a similar action taken by the publisher in the summer, when they brought on an industry veteran from Blizzard to contribute to the beloved franchise development group.

Below is the full content from Ismailer's announcement:

Team—

I know you all just finished your town hall - I trust you’re as thrilled as I am with the recent updates. Last time I shared you all a note, I mentioned the following: “I am confident in this team. You all are some of the most driven and creative developers we have had the pleasure to work with - and we’re excited for that collaboration to endure.”

With your dedication and versatility, especially over the past twelve months, you continue to prove that.

The player input from last fall’s Project ETHOS demo was revealing. It affirmed the potential of a roguelike shooter but indicated we still had refinements needed. It uncovered the requirement for a more distinct identity.

It has been motivating to see how far you’ve advanced. You accepted the criticism to heart and revamped Project ETHOS with a renewed goal - one that’s poised to achieve its ambition to our audience.

Our confidence in this project strengthens every day. To further the outstanding progress you’ve made, I am thrilled to introduce Ben Brinkman as the incoming Director of the team. After a period of discussions, Ben officially joins us on Monday, October 20.

His guidance and experience in the PVP shooter space is extensive, having devoted the past decade and a half creating and leading some of the most recognizable titles in gaming, such as the acclaimed shooter, and most recently, the battle royale hit.

Please join me in welcoming Ben in the coming days. We are all excited to persist witnessing the evolution of the game in the time to ahead.

The President

Background of the New Leader

The appointee presently holds the position of executive producer and production lead at Respawn Entertainment for their flagship title. Brinkman earlier was employed at Treyarch and Activision in various development positions on the iconic franchise series, and, before that, had stints at other industry leaders.

Game Details and Concept

Project Ethos was unveiled in last year alongside a public demo. At the time, 31st Union described the title as a "no-cost, 3rd-person action-packed experience and an thrilling evolution on the category."

"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Customize your character in live gameplay to suit your personal playstyle," the game's pitch reads. "Face the rivals with new abilities, risks, and tests that shift every session. Do you withdraw carefully with your valuable rewards? Alternatively take a risk, put it on the line, and trust your team can achieve the highest spot? The choice is yours."

Project Ethos does not have an official debut schedule or platforms, but players can expect further news as production advances.
